The airport is situated in the suburb of Ikeja, 22km (14 miles) northwest of Lagos.

A highway links Murtala Muhammed Airport with the city centre. The journey takes 30-60 minutes depending on the traffic.

750 short-stay car spaces are available at the airport.

Avis and Hertz both have desks in the terminal. It is possible to hire a car from most of the big international hotels too. Please note that fuel shortages often occur in Nigeria, so ensure you have enough petrol to complete your journey. Roads are in poor condition. Be vigilant when travelling on major roads, as robberies can, and do, happen. Avoid travel outside cities after dark. Be vigilant when driving in traffic jams (‘go slows’): keep valuables out of sight and keep doors and windows locked.

Taxis are the easiest and safest way to travel from the airport to the city. Choose one of the yellow taxis outside the terminal (upstairs, outside the departure lounge), check the driver’s ID, then tell him where you are going and agree on a fare before setting off.

Tourist information, including hotel reservation, is available at the customer service desk in the Arrival hall.

Money and communications: A bank, a bureau de change and a post office are available in the International Terminal.
Eating and drinking: Restaurants and bars are available throughout the airport.
Shopping: Duty-free is available in the International Terminal.
Other facilities: Medical facilities are available at the airport.

NOTE: Pickpockets and confidence tricksters, some posing as local immigration and other government officials, operate at the airport. Security is not always satisfactory, so be vigilant.
