The airport is situated 14km (9 miles) east of San Juan.

Major upgrades to the airport have been under way since 2006, with more than US$400 million being invested in improvement and expansion of facilities. The project is due for completion in 2011.

The terminals are connected internally.

Baldorioty de Castro Avenue runs west from the airport past the Isla Verde, Ocean Park and Condado sectors (tourist areas) into Old San Juan.

Long and short-term parking is available in the multi-storey car park adjacent to the terminals.

Companies with desks on the first level of each terminal include Avis, Budget, Charlie, Dollar Hertz, National and Thrifty. Offices are in Concourse E, and there are courtesy telephones in the Arrivals area.

There is a ground transportation information desk at the airport, which gives information and books tickets for all types of travel.
Road
Bus: Regular buses (website: www.dtop.gov.pr/ama/ama.htm) and airport shuttles run to San Juan, where there is a ferry service from Pier 2 across the bay to Catano.
Taxi: Taxis are available from the first level of each terminal (journey time to San Juan - 30-45 minutes). Puerto Rico has both ordinary taxis and taxis turisticos which have a special knowledge of tourist areas; these are painted white with a logo and charge set rates depending on zones.

A tourist information office is located in Terminal C (tel: (787) 791 1014) and a Travelers Aid desk can be found on the first level of Terminal D.

Money and communications: There is a bank on the second level (Departures) of Terminal D. There is a post office and telephones on the first level (Arrivals).
Eating and drinking: There are restaurants, bars and fast-food outlets on the second level (Departures) in Terminal D and C; snack bars are available in all terminals and at some gates.
Shopping: Shops are also located on the second level (Departures). Duty-free is available at gate 9 and between gates 2 and 3.
Luggage: Baggage handling assistance and porter facilities are available in the terminal building.
Other facilities: Medical emergency services are available.

Meeting space and a business centre are available in the Best Western San Juan Airport Hotel (tel: (787) 791 1700; website: www.bestwestern.com). The Courtyard Isla Verde Beach Resort (tel: (787) 791 0404; website: www.sjcourtyard.com), situated 1km (0.6 miles) from the airport, has four meeting rooms and a fully equipped business centre, with PCs and printers available. Facilities for frequent flyers and businessmen are located at the American Airlines Admiral’s Club in Terminal D, including free local calls, photocopying and fax service, and FedEx drop off. Other executive lounges include the Delta Airlines Crown Room in Terminal B and also at the Continental Airlines President’s Club in Terminal C.

These include lifts, a ramp, people movers, TDD telephones, disabled toilets and disabled parking spaces. Assistance is available to disabled travellers; travellers should contact the Travelers Aid desk on the first level of Terminal D. Passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should contact their airline prior to travel.
